I think of it as a comfortable and cozy state of mind in both thought and small changes to our living space, such as decorating a windowsill. Pronounced hoo ge or hoo guh, depending on which part of Scandinavia you’re in, it’s been a thing in Denmark since the 1800s and the concept itself has been around for centuries. The present-day science behind hygge involves upping the ante with your reading or hobby space. So, for example, if you enjoy reading by the window, why not make your window space more attractive and calming?
Here are some practical ideas for making your windowsill more attractive and cozier: A mini-lamp, a few books, an attractive cloth coverlet for the windowsill itself, candles, porcelain teacup, fresh or forever flowers, a plant, even a lava lamp or Himalayan salt lamp, a stand for your phone where you can listen to ocean waves or rain showers, and maybe….your cat! So, whether you’re stuck at home for months on end in the winter, or you would like a year-round window showpiece, why not maximize the vibe?
